All dogs that live in Sweden need to be marked with an identity number and recorded in the dog register of the Swedish Board of Agriculture. This register contains information about each dog and its owner.
It costs SEK 40 to report your dog to the register, if you use our online service Hundregistret while paying by card or direct payment via bank. If you register the dog by sending in a paper form, the fee is SEK 100. The same fee applies for registering a new owner for the dog.
You need to get your dog identified and registered before it is four months old.
If you buy a dog that is older than three months, you need to identify and register it within four weeks.
If you buy a dog that is already identified and registered, you need to report that the dog has a new owner.
You also need to report to the register if the dog dies, if you change its name, if you move, or if the situation changes in any other way.
You can easily register the dog, or report that it has a new owner, directly on our website.
Please use our online service Hundregistret. In order to use it, you need an electronic identification (eID).
If you use our online service you can see what registered dogs you have. You can also register new dogs and changes in ownership. You can change data on, for instance, the dog’s name and birth date, as well as the owner’s address and phone number. You can also deregister your dog if it has died or been exported.
If you cannot use our online service, you can register the dog or report a change in ownership by sending us a paper form.
The law requires all dogs to be identified and registered because aggressive and dangerous dogs sometimes cause problems. It has to be easy to find out who owns a dog that is running loose or that is aggressive.
The law gives the police, the county administrative boards and the customs authority access to the information in the register.
The central dog register is at the following address:
Jordbruksverket
826 84 Söderhamn.
If you want to talk to someone about the dog register, please call or send and e-mail to customer services.
