Rising trend in slaughter of pigs and poultry continues in March 2017
251 600 tonnes of milk were delivered to dairies in March 2017, about 2 % less than in March 2016. Figure A shows variations in quantities since 2014. 68 000 tonnes of drinking milk, 10 100 tonnes of cream, 7 600 tonnes of cheese and 1 800 tonnes of butter were also produced in March. Out of these, only butter production was greater than in the same month 2016.
In total, 33 800 cattle, of which 1 300 were calves, were slaughtered in March 2017. Their total slaughter weight was roughly 10 900 tons, which is somewhat more than I March 2016, but somewhat less than in the same month 2015. The trend observed earlier, that the slaughter of different types of bullocks and bulls increases while other types of cattle are slaughtered in fewer numbers, appears to be holding. The number of bullocks and bulls slaughtered was 8 % higher in March than in the same month of 2016, and the slaughtered weight was 10 % higher. The developments since January 2014 are shown in Figure B.
231 800 pigs were slaughtered in March, with a total slaughter weight of roughly 22 100 tons. Contrary to the month of February, which saw a marked decrease, this was a 10 % increase compared to the same month in 2016. Compared to March 2015 though, the increase was only 3 %. The developments in pig slaughter are illustrated in Figure C.
The slaughter of horses was, just like in February, roughly 190 animals. Compared to march 2016, this is unchanged. But compared to 2015 it is a decrease. Sheep, ram, and lamb slaughter amounted to 16 100 animals in March 2017, 16 and 24 % less than in March of 2016 and 2015 respectively. Worth noting is that this decrease comes after the month of February had an unusually high number of animals slaughtered. Hence, it is still too early to draw conclusions about the long term trend. Figure D shows how the total slaughter of sheep, rams and lambs has developed.
The amount of slaughtered poultry was 15 100 tonnes in March 2017, an increase of more than 20 % compared to the same month of 2016. The amount of hens and turkeys slaughtered saw a big increase in terms of percent, but the majority of the increase in weight took place in the chicken category. It was 2 240 tonnes greater than in March 2016. Figure E shows how the total slaughter of poultry has developed since the year 2014.
