Marked break in the slaughter trends for cattle, pigs and poultry in April 2017

242 800 tonnes of milk were delivered to dairies in April 2017, about 3 % less than in April 2016. Figure A shows variations in quantities since 2014. 67 000 tonnes of drinking milk, 9 000 tonnes of cream, 7 700 tonnes of cheese and 1 400 tonnes of butter were also produced in April.

In total, 28 700 cattle, of which 1 000 were calves, were slaughtered in April 2017. Their total slaughter weight was roughly 9 300 tonnes, which is 10 % less than in April 2016, and 13 % less than in April 2015. In March this year, it was the other way around, with the slaughter being greater than in the same month of the two previous years. This far, it appears that the seasonal variations are more powerful this year. This is illustrated by figure B, which shows the developments in cattle slaughter since January 2014. The slaughter of cattle was smaller for every category of cattle, compared to April 2016.

In comparison to previous years, the slaughter of pigs dropped markedly as well. 190 600 pigs were slaughtered, with a total slaughter weight just short of 18 000 tonnes. Marginally more boars were slaughtered than in April 2016, 130 compared to 110 animals, but apart from that the decrease has encompassed all categories of pigs. The developments in pig slaughter are illustrated in Figure C, and, as with the cattle slaughter, it appears that seasonal variations are now more powerful. 

The sheep, ram, and lamb slaughter however, was greater in April 2017 than in April the two preceding years. 15 400 animals were slaughtered in April 2017, 49 and 28 % more than in April of 2016 and 2015 respectively. Figure D shows how the total slaughter of sheep, rams and lambs has developed since 2014, and it was actually somewhat larger in April 2014.

The amount of slaughtered poultry was 12 300 tonnes in April 2017, almost 7 % less compared to the same month of 2016. The slaughter of hens was 18 % greater and the turkey slaughter 7 %, but almost 95 % of the slaughtered amount of poultry consists of chicken, which was down 9 % compared to April 2016. Compared to March this year, poultry slaughter was down almost 19 %. This means that the trend of poultry slaughter steadily increasing with every passing month compared to the previous year, is clearly broken. Figure E shows how the total slaughter of poultry has developed since the year 2014.

Egg delivery statistics for the first four months of 2017 are now available. In April, the eggs delivered amounted to roughly 9 000 tonnes. Compared to April 2016, it’s a decrease of 13 %. But, it is still 5 % more than in April 2015. Data for the months of January, February and March are available in Swedish the Board of Agriculture Database.
