The slaughter of cattle increased in February
The total quantity of milk delivered to dairies was 221 700 tonnes in February 2019. Compared with the statistics for February 2018, the differences were small. The quantity of organic milk delivered was 38 400 tonnes. The delivery of organic milk increased by approximately 1 % compared with February 2018.
During the month, 61 000 tonnes of drinking milk and 18 300 tonnes of acidified milk were produced. Of the produced drinking milk and acidified milk, there were 11 800 tonnes of organic drinking milk and 2 000 tonnes of organic acidified milk produced.
At the dairies, there were also 8 100 tonnes of cream, 6 700 tonnes of cheese, 1 000 tonnes of butter and 4 700 tonnes of milk powder produced. Of the produced cream and cheese, there were 410 tonnes of organic cream and 140 tonnes of organic cheese produced.
In February 2019, 35 300 cattle were slaughtered. The total slaughter weight of cattle was 11 300 tonnes, an increase by 8 % compared with the figures for February 2018.
209 700 pigs were slaughtered in February 2019. The total slaughter weight of pigs was 20 100 tonnes, unchanged compared with the same month last year.
The slaughter of sheep and lambs increased by 4 % in February 2019 compared with February 2018. There were 13 700 sheep and lambs slaughtered with a total slaughter weight of 290 tonnes.
12 600 tonnes of poultry were slaughtered in February 2019. In comparison with the statistics for February 2018, the slaughter of poultry increased by 4 %. Approximately 94 % of the slaughter of poultry consisted of chicken, a category in which the slaughter increased by approximately 4 %.
This month’s figures for eggs delivered to wholesalers were not available at the time of publication. When available, the statistics will be published in the Statistical database of the Board of Agriculture.
This month, regional statistics for the 2018 slaughter of livestock is published. The slaughter of poultry is not reported at regional level.
The slaughter distribution between the counties
A large proportion of slaughtered cattle, pigs, sheep and lambs in 2018 came from holdings in Skåne and Västra Götaland counties. More than 50 % of the slaughtered pigs came from holdings in these counties.
The slaughter distribution within the counties
In 12 of 21 counties, the total slaughter weight of pigs made up the majority of the total slaughter weight 2018. For remaining counties, cattle made up the largest share.
Size of the holdings
About 60 % of slaughtered cattle and pigs in 2018 came from holdings with more than 100 hectares of arable land. The second largest share of slaughtered pigs came from holdings with less than 2 hectares of arable land.
Holdings that sent animals to slaughter
In 2018, 73 % of holdings that sent animals to slaughter sent cattle. For pigs and sheep, the shares are 6 and 30 % respectively. A summation of the shares results in a figure exceeding 100 %, because holdings can hold multiple species.
Holdings from Gotland county had the highest average number of cattle sent to slaughter. The highest average number of pigs sent to slaughter were from Halland county.
The development in slaughter
When comparing the figures of 2018 with 2017, the largest increase in the slaughter of cattle was in Stockholm county, while that of the slaughter of pigs and sheep was in the counties of Jämtland and Dalarna respectively.
