Decreased slaughter of sheep and lambs in February 2020
The quantity of milk delivered to dairies in February 2020 was 225 500 tonnes, of which 39 600 tonnes organic milk. Compared with February 2019, the total delivery of milk increased by 2 % and the delivery of organic milk increased by 3 %.
At the dairies there were 56 600 tonnes of drinking milk and 17 900 tonnes of acidified milk produced. Furthermore there were 8 300 tonnes of cream, 6 600 tonnes of cheese, 1 600 tonnes of butter and 5 500 tonnes of milk powder produced during the month. The production of cheese included 100 tonnes of organic products.
In February there were 35 800 cattle slaughtered and the total slaughter weight of cattle were 11 600 tonnes. The slaughter of cattle increased by roughly 2 % compared with February 2019.
215 300 pigs were slaughtered during February 2020. The total slaughter weight of pigs were 20 700 tonnes and increased by approximately 3 % compared with the statistics for February 2019.
During February, there were 10 600 sheep and lambs slaughtered. The total slaughter weight of sheep and lambs, 220 tonnes, decreased by 26 % compared with the figures for February 2019.
The quantity of slaughtered poultry in February was 12 300 tonnes. Compared with February 2019, the slaughter of poultry decreased by roughly 3 %.
This month’s figures for eggs delivered to wholesalers were not available at the time of publication. When available, the statistics will be published in the Statistical database of the Board of Agriculture.
This month, regional statistics for the 2019 slaughter of livestock is published. The slaughter of poultry is not reported at regional level.
The slaughter distribution between the counties
A large portion of cattle, pigs, sheep and lambs slaughtered in 2019 came from holdings in Skåne and Västra Götaland counties. This particularly applies to the slaughter of pigs, for which more than half of the total slaughter weight of pigs came from these counties.
The slaughter distribution within counties
For 11 of 21 counties, pigs made up the majority of the total slaughter weight. For the remaining counties, cattle made up the largest share.
Size of holdings
More than 60 % of slaughtered cattle and pigs came from holdings with more than 100 hectares of arable land. In addition, more than 20 % of slaughtered pigs came from holdings with less than two hectares of arable land.
Holdings that sent animals to slaughter
Of holdings that sent animals to slaughter, 74 % of them sent cattle. For pigs and sheep, the corresponding shares were 6 and 30 %. A summation of these shares results in a figure exceeding 100 %, because holdings can hold multiple species.
Holdings from Gotland county had the highest average number of cattle and sheep sent to slaughter in 2019. Holdings from Örebro county had the highest average number of pigs sent to slaughter.
The development in slaughter
A comparison of 2019 and 2018 shows that the slaughter of cattle and sheep decreased the most in Stockholm county. The slaughter of pigs decreased the most in Jönköping county.
