During the
period 1980–2016 total meat consumption increased by 38 % to 88 kg, vegetables
by 101 % to 82 kg and fruits by 26 % to 105 kg. Total consumption of milk
during the same period decreased from about 185 to 109 liters per capita and
year, a decrease by 41 %. In addition, consumption of edible fats decreased
during the period from almost 25 to 17 kg per capita and year, a decrease by 30
%. Consumption of flour and hulled grains peaked in the early 2000s and then decreased.
In 2016, total consumption was 64 kg per capita, the same level as in 1980.
Total
consumption of sugar and suryp was 43 kg per capita in 2016 and varied between 41
and 49 kg during the period 1980–2016. At the same time consumption of
chocolate and confectionery increased significantly along with soft drinks. It
seems, however, that the increase was less dramatic after 2000. During 2016,
consumption of chocolate and confectionery per capita and year was 15 kg, a 57
% increase since 1980. Consumption of soft drinks is three times as high in
2016 compared with 1980. Mineral water and carbonated water with sugar and
flavours cannot be separated from soft drinks and it is probable that these
products have contributed to the abovementioned increase.
During the
period 1980–2016 the total supply of energy from
food products increased from 12 000 to about 13 100 kJ (2 900 to
3 100 kcal) per capita and day, corresponding to 9 %. About 28 % of the total supply of energy
comes from bread and cereals, 13 % from meat and meat products and 22 % from
milk, milk products, eggs and edible fats. Sugar, suryp, chocolate and
confectionery, ice cream, beer and soft drinks etc. account for 16 % of the
total supply of energy.
