(PDF)”. There were
71 091 agricultural holdings in 2010, 95 % of which can be sorted
into one of the seven types of farming presented here. The small sized holdings
were most numerous, 25 000, and pig holdings were the fewest, 599
holdings. Between 2000 and 2010 the number of dairy cow holdings has decreased
by 51 % and pig holdings decreased by 49 %. Västra Götaland’s county
was one of the counties with the highest number of holdings in all seven types
of farming. Mixed farming
There were
over 5 000 holdings with mixed farming in 2010, utilising 13 % of the
agricultural area in Sweden. The average agricultural area per holding had
increased by 15 % since 2000. The total number of animals had increased by
just under 930 000 during the same period, while the number of animals converted
to animal units had decreased by more than 20 000. Small sized
holdings
Horse care
and ley farming were dominant activities at small sized holdings. The average
area per holding was just over 7 hectares in 2000 and increased to just over 8
hectares in 2010. Just under 2/5 of all horses in Sweden live at small sized
holdings and these constitute 50 % of all animals at those farms. Poultry
and sheep were other significant animal types at small sized holdings. Field crops
There were
approximately 19 000 holdings in this category in 2010. The area used by
field crop holdings has increased since 2000 and amounted to about 1.1 million
hectares in 2010. The average agricultural area per holding increased from 52
to 51 hectares during the period. Cereals were the most used crop. Ley farming
increased significantly during the period. The price of wheat and potatoes had
increased as had the turnover for field crop holdings. The profitability, on
the other hand, has decreased. Pigs
The number
of pig holdings decreased during the period 2000 – 2010. In 2000 1.5 % of
all agricultural holdings were pig holdings and by 2010 the share had decreased
to 0.5 %. During the same period the total number of pigs decreased by
approximately 310 000. The number of pigs at pig holdings was almost the
same in 2000 and 2010. Dairy cows
Dairy cow
holdings constituted 13 % of all agricultural holdings in 2000 and
7 % in 2010. The number of dairy cow holdings decreased by 50 %
during the period. The share of dairy cows at dairy cow holdings in relation to
all dairy cows in Sweden has increased. The average agricultural area per
holding was 110 hectares in 2010, which is an increase by 57 % since 2000.
Ley used the largest area. Beef cattle
There were over
10 000 beef cattle holdings in 2010. The share of beef cattle holdings in
relation to all agricultural holdings averaged 15 % from 2000 to 2010. The price
of beef has fluctuated greatly but increased slightly during the period. The
profitability for beef cattle holdings has shown a clear decrease during
2005-2009. Sheep
Sheep
holdings constituted 4 % of all agricultural holdings in Sweden 2010. The
number of sheep (ewes, rams and lambs) at sheep holdings increased by 50 %
from 2000 to 2010 and those animals made up 53 % of the total number of
sheep in Sweden in 2010. The average herd size increased by 31 % during
the period and amounted to 110 animals in 2010. List of tables
