of Swedish households produce edible plants
Approximately 50 % of the households produce
some kind of edible plant. About 75 % of households living in a detached
house or on a farm property produce edible plants, while the corresponding
figure for households living in an apartment is roughly 30%. The most common
cultivation site for edible plants is a garden in connection to permanent
housing, nearly 70 % of them producing edible plants do so in a garden at
their permanent housing. About 25 % of households grow edible plants on a
balcony or a patio, which is the second most common cultivation site. About 3 billon SEK were spent on
plants and seeds More than 60 % of households spent money on
plants for leisure gardening during 2012. Households spent in total nearly 2.6
billion SEK on plants and 0.4 billion SEK on seeds during 2012. Non edible
plants such as bulbs and bedding plants are included in the sum for plants. If
the values are summed up, Swedish households spent nearly 3 billion SEK on
plants and seeds, which corresponds to 880 SEK per household, which spent at
least 1 SEK on plants and seeds. 45 % of households think home grown produce is better than
bought We asked the households in the survey to
consider a number of statements about leisure gardening. The results show that
about 45 % of households strongly agree with the statement that home grown
produce is better than bought. Almost 60 % of households producing edible
plants strongly agree as opposed to 35 % of households not growing edible
