Summary Summary
The total agricultural
area in applications is about the same as last year
According
to the applications for EU-subsidies, the total area of arable land decreased
by about 1 % or 12,900 hectares between the years 2007 and 2008 in Sweden. The
total area of pasture and meadowland has decreased by about 5 % or 29,100
hectares. Thus the total agricultural area has decreased by roughly 1 % or 42,000 hectares. While the areas under
cereals increase, the potatoes and sugar beets decreases.
The
cultivation of cereals is estimated to increase by 10.1 % or 100,500 hectares
in the year 2008 compared to 2007. The increase of spring barley
represents 78 % of the total
increase. Triticale and winter wheat is the only cereal crops that decrease,
while the other cereal crops are expected to increase. Higher prices for
cereals in combination with the new directive consider fallow land is the main
reason for this rather big increase in areas under cereals. The total area of
potatoes is estimated to be 27,000 hectares in the year 2008, which is an increase
by roughly 5 % or 1,500 hectares since 2007. The area of sugar beets continues
to decreases due to the sugar reform in Sweden and EU. It decreases 10 % or
4,100 hectares in the year 2008 compared to 2007. The area of fallow land
decreases substantial
The
cultivation of fallow land drop roughly 48 % between 2007 and 2008. From
281,600 hectares to 147,500 hectares. The new directive from EU to drop the
demands of having fallow land to collect single farm payment is the reason to
this substantial decrease. List of tables
