publikationen (PDF)”. In Sweden there are two
main sources of agricultural statistics. One is the Farm register (LBR) where the farm is defined in (EC) No 1166/2008 as “a
single unit both technically and economically which has a single management”.
The threshold is based on number of hectares of arable land and animals and the
type is decided in a typology especially developed for agricultural activities.
The other source is the business register (FDB) regulated in (EC) No 177/2008.
The register consists of “all enterprises carrying on economic activities
contributing to the gross domestic product (GDP) and their local units”. The
agricultural activities are classified according to the NACE-classification
comparable to other entrepreneurial activities. Depending on which
source that is used, the number of farms and the characteristics of the farms
differ, which makes statistics on agriculture incoherent and difficult to use. Therefore, the aim of this Statistical message is to
highlight differences and similarities between the concept
of the farm and its characteristics in the Farm and Business register Results show that the number of holdings were 62 937
in the farm register compared to 131 571 holdings in the business register
in 2016. The number of employees has been compared between the farm register
and the Swedish labour statistics (RAMS). Due to big differences between the
definitions of employment the number of employees vary between the registers.
The number of employees in the farm register were 108 314 persons in 2016
compared with 53 685 persons in the labour statistics. List of tables
