In EnglishSummary SummaryEffects of the Mid Term Rewiew on agricultural statisticsThe
statistics in this report is based on the Swedish Farm Register. It is updated
by using postal questionnaires and administrative sources such as the register
on the farmers applications for area based subsidies. The changes in
agricultural policy following the Mid Term Review was implemented in Sweden in
2005. As a consequence of the new policy the number of applications for area
based subsidies increased considerably. A large part of the new applications
could not be linked to existing holdings in the Farm Register and this led to
an increase in the number of holdings in the Farm Register. The increase does
not necessarily mean that the actual structure of the agricultural sector
changed correspondingly. Increasing number of small farmsFrom 2003 to 2005 the number of agricultural holdings increased by 7 920 or 12 % to 75 808 holdings. The holdings which were added mainly consisted of small farms - i.e. holdings with a calculated yearly labour requirement of less than 400 hours. In 2005 there were as many small farms as holdings with animal husbandry. Animal husbandry has earlier been the predominant type of farming. Decreasing labour requirementIn spite of the increased number of holdings the calculated total labour requirement in agriculture continued to decrease somewhat between the years 2003 and 2005. The decrease took place mostly within animal husbandry. However, animal husbandry still accounts for 54 % of the labour requirement. The labour requirement of almost 75 % of the agricultural holdings is less than one full-time employed person. List of tables 1. Number of holdings by type of farming in 2000, 2003 and 2005 2.
