land The aim of this report is to
describe the ownership structure of agricultural land as well as productive forest
land owned in combination with agricultural land in Sweden. Individual owners
own a very large share of the agricultural land, about 3.2 million hectares of
agricultural land of which nearly 2.6 million hectares is arable land. On
county level, individual owners own the smallest share of agricultural land in
Stockholm County (77 %) and the largest share in Norrbotten County
(98 %). About 52 % of the arable land owned by individual owners can
be found on management units consisting of more than 30 hectares of arable
land. Forest land owned in combination with agricultural
land The division in management units
made in this report implies that a large share of Sweden’s productive forest
land is owned in combination with agricultural land, more particularly 17
million hectares, which corresponds to 76 % of the total area of productive
forest land. One should not interpret this as if 17 million hectares of
productive forest land make up a resource for the country’s agricultural
holdings. A large share of this area is likely managed within forestry
companies rather than a resource in agricultural holdings. Individual owners
own 54 % of the productive forest land owned in combination with
agricultural land. High average age among the country’s land owners About
58 % of the agricultural land owned by physical persons is owned by
persons aged 55 years and older. By comparison, around 31 % of the Swedish
population is 55 years and older. The share of young land owners is largest in
Gotland County whilst Stockholm County has older land owners than the average.
Over 20 % of the agricultural land in Gotland County is owned by people
younger than 45 years. The corresponding value for Stockholm County is
11 %. About 73 % of all agricultural land owned by physical persons is
owned by men, the remaining 27 % is owned by women. List of tables
