Summary SummaryThe decrease in number of animals continues. The decrease in number of animals since many years remains also in 2002. The largest decrease is noticed for laying breed fowls with an estimated decrease of 11 % from 5 686 000 in June 2001 to 4 731 800 in June 2002. Also for the number of laying breed chicken the decrease is estimated to 11 % for this period. The number of bovine animals was 1 637 500 in June 2002, a decrease with 1 % since June 2001. The number of animals in the category heifers, bulls and stirs has decreased with 3 % and the number of sheep has decreased with 5 % between 2001 and 2002. The decrease in number of sheep follows an increase of the same size the year before. The total number of sheep and lambs was 426 800 in June 2002. The total number of pigs has remained nearly unchanged during the same period and was 1 881 700 in June 2002. The size of animal stocks still
increases
The number of holdings with animals has since long time decreased more than the number of animals, which has led to increases in average sizes of stocks. This trend has continued for 2002. The changes have been greater for pigs than for other animals. Since 1995 the average stock for sows and boars has increased from 31 to 77 and for fattening pigs from 157 to 336.
