to decrease
The number
of cattle has decreased during the recent years. Since the last census, which
was performed in 2010, the number of cattle has decreased by more than 39,000
animals. The category heifers, bulls and steers constitutes the greatest part
of this decrease. The category suckler cows is the only one which has increased
since 1995. Despite
this, and the fact that the number of cattle holdings has decreased, the size
of herd for cattle has increased. At the same time as the average size of herd
has increased by 11 % or 8 animals, the number of holdings has decreased by
2,600 since 2010, when the last census was conducted. Number of sheep is higher
2013 compared to 1999
The number
of ewes and rams has increased by 48 % since 1999. The number of lambs has
increased by 20 % during the same period. In total the number of sheep has
increased by 12,000 since 2010. However the number of sheep was at the highest
point in 2011 after which it has decreased. The number of sheep holdings is
stable since 2010 and slightly lower than 2011 and the average herd size has
increased. The average
herd size for ewes and rams was 23.4 heads in 1999, in 2013 it was 32.6 heads. Major increase in pigs
herd size
The number
of pigs decreased in 2013 which is a continuation of the steady downward trend
since 1999. In total the number of pigs has decreased by more than 121,000
since the last census in 2010. Since 2012 where the number was estimated
through a sample survey the number has increased with 35,500 animals. The number of breeders has
decreased. The number of breeders of fattening
pigs has fallen by 345 since 2010. The number has decreased by approximately 79 %, or 4,700 breeders,
since 1999. The average herd size has increased since 1999 though, and the
trend continues in 2013 as well. A breeder of fattening pigs has a herd of 795 heads on average; in 1999
the same figure was 252. List of tables
