Almost one fifth of the cattle in Sweden are converted to organic production methods
This report contains statistics on fully converted organic livestock in Sweden. The statistics cover livestock reared using organic production methods according to Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 of 28 June 2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products and repealing Regulation (EEC) No 2092/91.
In 2013 285,700 or 19 % of the cattle were converted to organic production methods, an increase by 58 % since 2009. 14 % of the dairy cows and 34 % of the suckler cows were converted to organic farming in 2013.
The number of fully converted sheep was 118,800 in 2013, an increase by 73 % since 2009. The share of organic sheep in relation to the total herd was 21 %.
In 2013, 868,400 or 13 % of the laying hens were fully converted to organic production methods. The number of organic laying hens has been steadily increasing since 2009 and, in total, the number has increased by 50 % since 2009.
When it comes to pigs and broilers the number of organic producers as well as the number of animals are very few compared to the total herd of animals and the number of converted pigs and broilers has been quite stable since 2009. The share of organic pigs in relation to the total herd was 1 % and for broilers it was even less.
