2018, the number of dairy cows was 319 400, a decrease by approximately 2 600
animals compared with June 2017. Since 2000 the number of dairy cows has
decreased by almost 108 200 or 25 %. The number
of holdings with dairy cows has continued to decrease since June 2017. Such
holdings amounted to 3 500 in June 2018. The number of holdings with suckler
cows decreased slightly in 2018 to 10 400 in June, a decrease by 0.5 %. The number
of pigs has shown an increase since 2017 with approximately 2.3 %. The
increase applies only for fattening pigs while sows and piglets decrease. The
changes are statistically significant. Between
2017 and 2018, the number of sheep has decreased by 18 900 animals which
is a change of 3 %. Compared with 2000, the number of sheep has increased by
more than 36 %. In the same period, the number of holdings with sheep has increased
by almost 15 %. For a long period, the trend has been that the proportion
of adult animals increased relative to the proportion of lambs. In 1995 there
were 1.36 lambs per adult animal. For the first time, it is estimated that the
number of adult animals exceeds the number of lambs. Since 2017,
the number of fowls has increased by 5.5 % and the number of broilers has
