Number of cattle in December 2015

The total number of cattle in December 2015 was 1 428 398 which is a slight decrease since December 2014. The number of dairy cows decreased by 2.1 %, and the number of other cows increased by 1.5 %.

The total number of heifers, bulls and steers increased by 0.7 % since December 2014. The increase can be attributed to animals aged between 1 and 2. Animals older than 2 years, however, decreased by 4.4 %. The number of calves increased by 6 200 animals during 2015.

Since December 2000, the total number of cattle has decreased by 12 %. The number of dairy cows decreased by 21 % while the number of other cows increased by 15 %. For all other categories, the number of animals decreased during the period.

The total number of holdings with cattle has decreased for many years. Since December 2014, the total number of holdings decreased by 2.7 % or almost 500 holdings. The number of holdings with dairy cows has also continued to decrease. Such holdings amounted to just over 4 000 animals wich was a decrease by 6.1 % compared to December 2014. Between June 2014 and June 2015, the decrease was 5.6 % for this category of holdings.
