The number of goats in Sweden in June 2018 has been estimated to approximately 20,000. The number of female goats has been estimated to 10,700 and the number of other goats to 9,300. The number of goat breeders was 2,400.
The number of goat breeders who saw their goat breeding as a hobby was 1,800 while 540 saw the goats as part of their business activity and 60 goat breeders replied that the goats were part of other types of organisational activities or educational activities.
About 11,000 goats, that is 60 %, of all goats were kept by goat breeders who had the goats as part of their business activities. 8 000 goats, about 40 %, of all goats were kept as part of a business activity and the remaining 600 goats were kept by goat breeders as part of other types of organisational activities or educational activities.
The number of goat breeders milked their goats has been estimated to 230, that is just under 10%. One of four of those who had the goats in a business activity milked their goats. The amount of goat milk produced has been estimated to 1,471,000 kilos in 2018.
Approximately 40% of the goat breeders who kept the goats in business activities estimated that sales and profitability will increase in three years' time. Examples of obstacles that the goat keepers highlighted were that law-making and regulations are not designed to suit such a small-scale activity as goat keeping often is.
