agricultural land prices and rents were not calculated or published on a
regular basis. This kind of statistics has been provided to Eurostat by most member
states annually since 1973. Since the accession to the EU in 1995, Sweden is
also providing Eurostat with annual statistics on agricultural land prices and
rents. In Sweden approximately 26 000 farmers rent land
according to the farm structure survey 2016. The price estimations of
agricultural rents are based on sample surveys with postal inquiries. About
1 800 farmers have been included in the stratified sample. The
questionnaire is designed to enable estimations of the rented values of agricultural
land excluding other things than land, such as buildings or entitlements. Between the accession to the EU in 1995 and 2011, rent
prices in Sweden have doubled. Since 2011, however, the average price has
remained around 1 600–1 730 SEK per hectare. The average price in Sweden to rent
one hectare of agricultural land, including rents without payment, was 1 726
SEK in 2018. For arable land the average price was 1 815 SEK and for
permanent grassland 555 SEK. The prices for land rents increased by 1 %
between 2017 and 2018. The biggest increase was found in the plain district in
southern Götaland and in the plain district in northern Götaland. On average,
the rents for agricultural land in the southern parts of Sweden are around ten
times higher than in the northern parts. List of tables
