production value of the Swedish horticultural output amounted to just under 5.0
billion SEK in 2016, an increase by 3 percent compared with 2015 and by 5
percent compared with the 5-year average for 2011–2015. Open ground
cultivation contributed 60 percent of the total production value in 2016, while
greenhouse production contributed the remaining 40 percent. Similarly, edible
crops and ornamental plants contributed 61 and 39 percent of the total value
respectively. Within the
open ground production, the production value of fruits increased by 11 percent
between 2015 and 2016, while the value of berries decreased by 7 percent. The
value of vegetables as well as nursery plants remained essentially unchanged
during the same period. Among the
greenhouse-grown crops, the production value of vegetables and berries
increased by 9 percent between 2015 and 2016, while the value of bulbous
flowers increased by 6 percent and the value of potted plants and bedding
plants increased by 5 percent. From a production
value perspective, the largest open ground crops were carrots, strawberries and
deciduous trees, while the largest greenhouse crops were cucumber, tulips and
