The areas of horticultural
cultivation are unchanged
The total
outdoor area for horticultural cultivation has been roughly the same since 1981
but with some minor variations between the years, while the number of holdings
continually has decreased since 1984. In 2005 the total outdoor area for
horticultural cultivation was 12,600 hectares, which is an increase by 4 per
cent since 2002. The number of holdings was 1,853 in 2005, which is a decrease
by roughly 10 per cent since 2002. Areas for
cultivation of vegetables accounted for about 56 per cent of the total outdoor
area, while areas for fruit and berries accounted for 40 per cent of the area.
Among vegetables the cultivation of carrots, iceberg lettuce and onions was
predominant and in all accounted for about 55 per cent of the total area for
vegetables. Cultivation of apples and strawberries was predominant for fruit
and berries, and accounts for 75 per cent of the area of fruit and berries. The horticultural greenhouse
area decreases
The total
horticultural area in greenhouses has been mainly unchanged between 1984 and
2002, but has somewhat varied between different years. In 2005 the total area
was 3,013,000 square metres, which is a decrease by roughly 11 per cent since
2002. The number of holdings with greenhouse cultivation has continually
decreased since 1984. In 2005, the number of holdings decreased with about 15
per cent compared with 2002. Cultivation of tomatoes and cucumbers is
predominant in greenhouses and accounted for roughly 79 per cent of the total
area of vegetables and berries. The use of heating oil
continue to decrease
In 2005,
the use of heating oil accounted for about 51 per cent of the energy
consumption in greenhouses, which is a decrease by 6 percentage points since
2002. The use of heating oil was roughly 530,000 MWh in 2005, which is a
decrease by 33 per cent since 1999. The use of biological fuels, natural gas
and electrical energy has increased between 2002 and 2005. List of tables
