area per holding that grows horticultural crops on open ground has increased
every year since 1987. The average area was 8,7 hectares for these holdings in
2011. The increase corresponds to 267 % between 1987 and 2011. The total
area grown with horticultural crops on open ground was 12 623 hectares in
2011. The number of holdings was 1 443. The average
greenhouse area per holding that grows horticultural crops has since 1987 increased
by 185 %. The average area per holding was 3 837 m2
in 2011. The total greenhouse area was 2 678 000 m2 in
2011. The total number of holdings with greenhouse production was 698. Production of
bulbous plants increases
Between the
years 1987 and 2005 the production of bulbous plants has remained rather constant,
while the number of holdings producing bulbous plants has decreased. Between
the years 2005 and 2008 the production of bulbous plants increased by 7%.
Between the year 2008 and 2011 the production increased even more, by
22 %. Tulips as
cut flowers are the largest product in the group of bulbous plants. In 2011 the
production of tulips reached 152 million cut flowers. It is an increase by
21 % compared with the production in 2008. Futhermore, the production of bulbous
plants as pot plants increased greatly in 2011, by 33 % compared with
2008. The production of bulbous pot plants reached 17, 5 million pots in 2011. Biofuel is the
largest energy source in greenhouse production
The use of
biofuels such as pellets, bark, cube fuel and chips increased between 2008 and
2011. In 2008 these biofuels represented 18 % of the energy use in
greenhouses. In 2011 they represented 61 % of the total energy use in greenhouses.
Oil is the second largest energy source in greenhouses and represented 15 %
of the energy use in greenhouses in 2011. The use of oil decreased by 40 %
between 2008 and 2011. List of tables
