2 066 Swedish holdings practised professional horticultural production
during 2014, employing just over 15 000 people. While 1 602 holdings engaged
in open ground cultivation on 12 822 hectares, 848 holdings exercised greenhouse
cultivation on a total surface area of just over 287 hectares. Almost
60 % of the total open ground area was used for vegetable cultivation,
while berry-, fruit- and ornamental plant cultivation occupied 24, 13 and
4 % of the total open ground area, respectively. The available greenhouse
area was more or less evenly divided between the cultivation of ornamental
plants and vegetables or berries. From an
area point-of-view, the largest open ground crops in 2014 were, in descending
order, strawberries, carrots, apples, iceberg lettuce and onions. The area-wise
largest nursery crop was deciduous trees, which occupied just over 45 % of
the available open ground area for ornamental plants. Several
crops exhibited high production during 2014. For instance, the harvest of
apples exceeded 24 500 tonnes, while the strawberry harvest almost reached
16 000 tonnes and the carrot harvest was over 119 000 tonnes. The
greenhouse production of cucumber landed on over 28 000 tonnes, while the
total tomato production was just over 14 500 tonnes, of which about
12 % were “special assortment” tomatoes. For more
than a decade, the Swedish greenhouse production has exhibited a continous
increase in energy efficiency and a steady transition towards renewable fuels.
These trends were continued and accentuated during the period 2011 to 2014. During
this period, the total energy consumption in greenhouses decreased by more than
4 %, while the share of energy from renewable sources increased from 38 to
48 %. List of tables
