The year 2018 was an unusual harvest year for several Swedish horticultural crops. The harvest of carrot, leek, iceberg lettuce and gherkin was between 19 and 36 % lower than the average for the five preceding years. For iceberg lettuce and carrot, the decreased production was largely due to low yields, which also affected the harvest of onions, white cabbage and cauliflower, albeit to a lower extent. For gherkin and leek, the low harvest was also an effect of a decrease in harvested areas.
In contrast, the harvest of apples in 2018 was record-high and reached above 30 000 metric tonnes for the first time as a result of an unusually high yield. The harvest of other lettuces than iceberg lettuce was also remarkably large as a combined result of a large increase in harvested area and high yields.
From an area perspective, strawberries constitute the largest Swedish horticultural crop, with an area of 2 483 hectares in 2018, followed by carrot, apple and onions, which exhibit areas of 1 763, 1 550 and 1 220 hectares, respectively.
