shows statistics on the Swedish organic horticulture 2017, as defined by the
rules established by the EU regulation (EG) 834/2007. Only fully converted
production is included, while production on land under conversion is counted as
conventional production. The area
utilized for open ground organic horticulture amounted to 1 959 hectares
in 2017, representing just under 15 % of the entire Swedish horticultural
open ground area. Of this area, 58 % was accounted for by vegetable production,
while production of berries, fruit and ornamental plants accounted for
25 %, 16 % and less than 1 % respectively. By far, the
most cultivated organic crop was carrot, which was grown on 450 hectares,
resulting in a production of 26 000 tonnes, amounting to a quarter of the
total carrot production in 2017. Other prominent crops in the organic open
ground cultivation were apples, blackcurrants, strawberries, cabbage and onion. The organic
horticultural greenhouse cultivation used just over 260 000 square meters
during 2017, representing 9 % of the total horticultural greenhouse area.
Two thirds of the organically cultivated greenhouse area was devoted to edible
crops and the remaining third to ornamental plants. The share of various
greenhouse crops produced organically differed widely. Over 99 % of the
Swedish aromatic plant production and 75 % of the greenhouse lettuce
output was produced using organic methods in 2017, while the share of
organically produced cucumber and tomato only reached 1 % and 3 %
respectively. List of tables
