The production in Swedish aquaculture in 2017 was 10 881 metric tonnes of fish for consumption which when converted to round fresh weight is the equivalent of 12 834 tonnes. The dominating species was rainbow trout (11 361 tonnes in fresh weight), with 88 percent of the total production of fish for consumption. The production of arctic char amounted to 1 310 tonnes. The production of eel was estimated at 105 tonnes. Furthermore, there were 2 014 tonnes of cultivated blue mussels.
The total value of the aquaculture production of fish for consumption, including crayfish and mussels, amounted to SEK 521 million, an increase by SEK 34 million compared with 2016. The dominating species was rainbow trout with SEK 426 million.
The production of fish for stocking was estimated at 924 tonnes. The dominating species was rainbow trout with 565 tonnes. The salmon trout production amounted to 234 tonnes and arctic char was estimated at 65 tonnes. The total value of the aquaculture production of fish for stocking amounted to SEK 84 million, an increase by SEK 16 million compared with 2016.
For compensatory purposes, 2.9 million fry of salmon and sea trout were released, mainly in rivers running into the Baltic Sea.
The number of persons employed in Swedish aquaculture was estimated at 364 and the total number of working hours at 481 000.
