Summary Summary
This
report provides final data for the year 2002 for the yield per hectare and
total production of cereal crops, peas, oilseed crops, potatoes and temporary
grasses. The results are presented for counties,
production areas and for all of Sweden. The
tables show the number of observations, yield per hectare in kg, total production
in metric tons and crop areas. Standard errors are given for the yield per
hectare and total production. Cereals, peas and oilseed
crops
Total
production of cereal crops for the whole country is estimated at 5.47 million
tons. This is almost equivalent to the average for the previous five years. A
decline in the areas of cereals under cultivation was compensated for by high
yields per hectare. The total
production of winter wheat is estimated at 1.8 million tons. This is equivalent
to about 33 per cent of the total production of cereal crops. Areas under
cultivation for winter wheat fluctuate very much due to weather conditions in
the autumn of the previous year. Excessive rains in the autumn 2001 offered bad
opportunities for sowing winter crops. Total
production of peas is estimated at 84 400 tons, which is about 11 per cent
more than the previous year. The 2002
harvest of rape and turnip rape is estimated at about 159 200 tons.
Compared to 2001, this is an increase of 50 per cent. This increase is due to
an increase of cultivation of rape and turnip by 50 per cent. The total
production of oil flax is estimated at 5 200 tons. Since
1998, statistics on crop yields for cereals, peas and oilseed crops have been
based entirely on an interview survey. The sample of the survey of 2002
consists of 4 350 farmers. The survey was carried out in October.
Information was requested for total farm production in tons of these crops and
their average moisture content. Yields per hectare at the farm level are calculated
by dividing the production by the crop area of the farm. Unharvested crop areas
lower the yield per hectare. The total production has been calculated from data
on yield per hectare; area statistics has been calculated from final data on
usage of arable land. The figures are mainly based on data from the Swedish
administrative database for agricultural subsidies, IACS. Crop areas cut as
green fodder have been excluded. Unharvested areas and areas cut as green
fodder are presented in separate tables. Potatoes
The results
are presented for table potatoes and potatoes for processing of starch. For the
whole country, the yield per hectare for table potatoes is estimated at
26 470 kg and the total production is estimated at 613 000 tons. The
corresponding figures for potatoes for processing of starch are 35 050 kg
and 301 000 tons, respectively. The total production of potatoes in Sweden
continues to decrease. The results
for 2002 are based on a mail survey with a sample of 1 304 holdings for
table potatoes and a sample of 183 holdings for potatoes for processing starch. Since 1960,
Statistics Sweden has produced statistics for potatoes using an objective
method based on probability sampling and physical measurements with samples
taken from the fields. The method was changed 1999 to mail enquiries to a
sample of farmers. Due to the changes all comparisons between years should be
made with great caution. The areas are based on statistics from the
administrative database for agricultural subsidies, IACS. The
tables 15 and 16 show the number of observations, the total and reduced yields
per hectare in kg and total production in metric tons. Standard errors are also
presented. Unharvested areas are shown in table 24. As for reduced yields, the
yield per hectare is reduced for small, blighted and green potatoes for table potatoes.
The reduction for potatoes for processing of starch is made only for blighted
potatoes. These reductions are made with standard values, derived from the
objective potato surveys conducted until 1998. Adjustments in the reduced
yields have also been made for unharvested areas, which have lowered the yield
per hectare. The unharvested area 2002 was estimated at 2.3 per cent for table
potatoes and 0.4 per cent for potatoes of processing starch, a little lower
than previous years. Temporary grasses
For the
last few years there have been no official Swedish statistics for yields from
temporary grasses. During 2002 a mail enquiry with follow up by telephone was
performed. The sample was 700 farming units. The survey only covers temporary
grasses harvested as hay, hay-silage and silage, and includes re-growth. It
does not cover temporary grazings or re-growth from temporary grasses which is
grazed. The results
are presented in tables 17-20. The total production is estimated at
4 012 000 tonnes and the yield per hectare at 5 200 kilogram per
hectare, at 16.5 per cent moisture content. Results are also presented for
eight production areas. List of tables
