This
report provides data for the year 2014 on wildlife damage to agricultural
crops. The results are presented for counties,
production areas and for all of Sweden. Data only shows wildlife damage before
harvest. Damage on for example silage bales after harvest is not included in
the data. Neither are crops that must be resowed due to early wildlife damage
included in the data.
The
tables show percentage of farms with wildlife damage, wildlife damaged crop
area, harvest loss in metric tonnes, harvest loss in per cent of the total harvest,
and harvest loss in shares of different wildlife species. Tables also show
number of farms where wildlife species affect the choice of crop.
Wild boars are causing
most damage
Wild boar
is the animal that causes most damage in all crops except oats, where moose
causes the greatest harm. Spring wheat, peas, maize, cereals harvested green, table
potatoes, potatoes for processing of starch and temporary grasses are crops with
large percentage of wild boar damage.
Large proportion of
farmers have wildlife damage in their crops
Among
farmers who cultivate cereals, dried pulses and oilseeds, 37.5% had wildlife
damage in one or more of their crops. Among the growers of table potatoes and potatoes
for processing of starch it was estimated that 19 and 24% had wildlife damage
while the figure for growers of temporary grasses is 20%. Kronoberg and
Södermanland are counties where a large proportion of farmers had wildlife damage
in their crops.
More than 8% of the area for
cereals was damaged by wildlife
Wildlife
damage occurred in just over 8% of the area for cereals. Table potatoes and potatoes
for processing of starch had wildlife damage to almost 9% of the area. For temporary
grasses, that are grown on 88 520 hectares, about 10% of the area had some form
of wildlife damage.
Wildlife affects the
choice of the crop
More than a
quarter of all farmers indicate that the wildlife affects their choice of
crops. Wild boar and moose are the animals that have the greatest influence on
what is possible to grow. Peas and oats are crops that many farmers totally
refrain from cultivating but also wheat and winter rape are difficult to grow
in many places.
Large variations of
harvest loss
For the
country as a whole, the harvest losses of wildlife damage range between 0,2 - 7%
of the total harvest per crop. The variations are large both geographically and
among crops. Many farms have no wildlife damage at all while other farmers
reported that more than half of the harvest was destroyed.
