This report provides final data for 2016 on yield per hectare and total production of cereal crops, dried pulses, oilseed crops, annual plants harvested green, potatoes and temporary grasses. The results are presented for counties, production areas and for all of Sweden.
The tables show the number of observations, yield per hectare in kilogram (kg), crop areas and total production in metric tonnes. Standard errors are given for yield per hectare, total production, unharvested areas and areas harvested as green fodder.
Cereals, dried pulses and oilseed crops
The total production of cereal crops for the whole country is estimated at 5 480 500 tonnes, including grain maize. This is 11% less than in 2015 and 3% more than the average for the last five years.
The total production of winter wheat is estimated at 2 502 100 tonnes which is an increase of 14% compared to the average of the last five years and equivalent to about 46% of the total production of cereal crops.
The total production of peas is estimated at 92 700 tonnes, which is 12% more than the previous year. The total production of field beans (Vicia faba L.) is estimated at 103 900 tonnes.
The 2016 harvest of rape and turnip rape is estimated at 268 500 tonnes. This is 25% less than in 2015 and 15% less than the average for the last five years. The total production of oil flax is estimated at 16 800 tonnes.
Since 1998, statistics on crop yields for cereals, dried pulses and oilseed crops have been based on an interview survey. Beginning in 2005, the farmers can also use the Internet as a tool for data delivery to Statistics Sweden.
The sample of the 2016 survey consists of 4 397 holdings. The survey was carried out in October and November. Information was requested for total farm production in tonnes of these crops and their average moisture content. Yields per hectare at the farm level are calculated by dividing the production by the crop area of the farm. Unharvested crop areas are included and will lower the yield per hectare. Crop area statistics have been calculated from final statistics on usage of arable land. The figures on areas are based on data from the Swedish administrative database for agricultural subsidies, IACS. Crop areas cut as green fodder have been excluded when it comes to areas for the production of grain. Unharvested areas and areas cut as green fodder are presented in separate tables.
The results are presented for table potatoes and potatoes for processing of starch. The yield per hectare for table potatoes for the entire country is estimated at 31 810 kgs and the total production is estimated at 551 500 tonnes. The corresponding figures on potatoes for processing of starch are 45 060 kgs per hectare and 309 800 tonnes, respectively.
The results for 2016 are based on a survey with a sample of 739 holdings for table potatoes and a sample of 191 holdings for potatoes for processing starch. The areas are based on statistics from IACS.
Tables 21 and 22 show the number of observations, the total and reduced yields per hectare in kg and total production in metric tonnes. Standard errors are also presented. Unharvested areas are shown in table 31. As for reduced yields, the yield per hectare is reduced for small, blighted and green potatoes for table potatoes. The reduction for potatoes for processing of starch is made only for blighted potatoes. These reductions are made with standard values, derived from the objective potato surveys conducted until 1998. Adjustments in the reduced yields have also been made for unharvested areas, which have lowered the yield per hectare. The unharvested area 2016 was estimated at 0.8% for table potatoes and 0.3% for potatoes for processing of starch.
The total production of temporary grasses is estimated at 4 733 700 tonnes and the yield per hectare at 5 880 kgs per hectare, at 16.5% moisture content. The results are presented in tables 23–27.
The results are based on a sample of 1 270 holdings.
The survey covers only temporary grasses harvested as hay, hay-silage or silage including regrowth. It does not cover temporary grazings or regrowth from temporary grasses which are grazed.
