Summary Summary
This
report provides preliminary results for the year 2002 for the yield per hectare
and total production of cereal crops, peas and oilseed crops. The results are presented for all of Sweden. Cereals, peas and oilseed
crops
Total
production of cereal crops for the whole country is estimated at 5.45 million
tons. This is almost equivalent to the average for the previous five years. A
decline in the areas of cereals under cultivation was compensated for by high
yields per hectare. The total
production of winter wheat is estimated at 1.8 million tons. This is equivalent
to about 33 per cent of the total production of cereal crops. Areas under
cultivation for winter wheat fluctuate very much due to weather conditions in
the autumn of the previous year. Excessive rains in the autumn 2001 offered bad
opportunities for sowing winter crops. Total
production of peas is estimated at 83 100 tons, which is about 9 per cent
more than the previous year. The 2002
harvest of rape and turnip rape is estimated at about 159 000 tons.
Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of 50 per cent. This
increase is due to an increase of cultivation of rape and turnip by 50 per
cent. The total production of oil flax is estimated at 3 300 tons. Since
1998, statistics on crop yields for cereals, peas and oilseed crops have been
based entirely on an interview survey. The sample of the survey of 2002
consists of 4 350 survey units. The selected farms are a random sample
from throughout the country. These preliminary results are based on a subsample
of 1 087 survey units. These units receive priority in the survey and in
the subsequent data processing at Statistics Sweden. The survey was carried out
in October. Information was requested for total farm production in tons of
these crops and their average moisture content. Yields per hectare at the farm level
are calculated by dividing the production by the crop area of the farm. The
total production was calculated from data on yield per hectare; area statistics
were calculated from preliminary data on usage of arable land in June 2002.
These area data are based on figures from the administrative data for agricultural
subsidies, IACS. Crop areas cut as green fodder have been excluded. The tables
show the number of observations, yield per hectare in kg, total production in
metric tons and crop areas. Standard errors are given for the yield per hectare
and total production. List of tables
