Statistics on agricultural land prices and rents have not on a regular basis been calculated or published in Sweden before the accession to EU. In EU this kind of statistics have been provided by most of the Member States to Eurostat each year since 1973. Since the accession to EU in 1995, also Sweden is providing Eurostat with annual statistics on agricultural land prices and rents.
The estimations of agricultural rents are based on sample surveys with postal inquiries. Concerning the last year about 1 800 farmers have been included in the sample, which is stratified. The questionnaires are worked out in a way that it is possible to estimate the rented values of only the arable land, which means that rented values of living houses or other buildings are not included in the estimates of agricultural rents delivered to Eurostat.
The estimations of agricultural land prices are based on information, collected by Statistics Sweden, from most sales of whole or parts of agricultural estates and information from the taxation register for real estates. However, it must be mentioned that in Sweden rather few sales of exclusively agricultural land are performed each year. Most sales of whole or parts of agricultural estates also include buildings and other kinds of land.
There has been an upward trend in the rents since 1995, especially in the south of Sweden. In table 6, in which rents for the EU Member States are shown, it can be seen that the rents in Sweden seem to be low compared to some other Member States. However the estimated rents in different countries are not fully comparable because of differences in calculation methods.

As for rents, there are difficulties to compare agricultural land prices in different countries because of differences in calculation methods.
