Greater slaughter volumes than usual in January
In January 2018, the quantity of milk delivered to dairies was 241 900 tonnes, an amount 1 % less than January 2017, which used to be the January month with the least amount of delivered milk.
In January the production of drinking milk was 65 400 tonnes, a decrease compared with January 2017. Furthermore, 9 000 tonnes of cream, 7 100 tonnes of cheese and 1 500 tonnes of butter were produced during the month.
During January almost 36 500 cattle were slaughtered, of which 1 400 were calves. The total weight of slaughtered cattle was roughly 11 800 tonnes. These statistics vary compared with previous January months, as the slaughter weight for January 2018 is 14 and 22 % higher than January 2017 and 2016 respectively.
There were 229 300 pigs slaughtered in January with a total slaughter weight of approximately 22 000 tonnes. Compared with January 2017 the slaughter weight increased by 6 %. This increase is due to an increase in the slaughter of pigs in the category Fattening pigs, which was the only category with higher slaughter compared to January 2017.
The slaughter of sheep, rams and lambs increased as well. In January, 16 100 sheep, rams and lambs were slaughtered with a total slaughter weight of 330 tonnes. Compared with the same month of the previous years, the slaughter weight of sheep, rams and lambs was 5 % higher than January 2017 and 30 % higher than January 2016.
The figures for slaughtered poultry and egg delivery were not available at the time of publication. The statistics will be published in the Board of Agriculture Statistical database when available.
