The number of dairy cows totaled 357 200 animals in June 2008, a decrease by approximately 12 400 animals since June 2007. The number of dairy cows has decreased by almost 125 000 or 26 per cent since 1995.
The number of holdings with dairy cows continued to decrease. In June 2008 such holdings totaled 6 500. The number of holdings with cows for calves production decreased, from 12 500 in 2007 to approximately 12 300 in 2008, a decrease by almost 200 holdings compared to 2007.
The number of pigs have decreased as well since 2007. Fattening pigs decreased by 41 000 animals between 2007 and 2008. This correspond to a decrease by approximately 4 per cent. Hence, the downward trend in the production of fattening pigs continues. Sows and boars decreased by close to 18 000 or 10 per cent since 2007.
Since 1995 the number of holdings with production of fattening pigs have decreased by 76 per cent or 6 300 holdings and the breeders of piglets have decreased by 82 per cent or 5 600 holdings. However, since 2007, the number of breeders of fattening pigs have increased by 100 holdings.
The number of sheep continued to increase, in particular ewes and rams which have increased by more than 30 per cent since 1995. Between 2007 and 2008, the number of lambs increased by 2 per cent. Although holdings keeping sheep increased slightly between June 2007 and June 2008, the overall trend has been declining since 1995. In fact, the number of holdings have decreased by approximately 20 per cent.
The number of fowls has decreased since 1995 by close to 10 per cent. However, a small increase was noted between 2007 and 2008 by approximately 4 per cent. Chickens of laying breed continued to decreased. Holdings keeping fowls has decreased by 5 000 since 1995.
