In June 2019, the number of dairy cows was 305 600, a decrease by approximately 13 800 animals compared with June 2018. Since 2000 the number of dairy cows has decreased by more than 122 000 or 29 %.
The number of holdings with dairy cows has continued to decrease since June 2018. Such holdings amounted to 3 300 in June 2019. The number of holdings with suckler cows also decreased in 2019 to 10 300 in June, a decrease by 1.5 %.
The number of pigs has shown an increase since 2018 with approximately 4.5 %. The increase applies only for fattening pigs and piglets while sows and boars decrease. The changes are statistically significant.
Between 2018 and 2019, the number of sheep has decreased by 38 400 animals which is a change of 6.5 %. Compared with 2000, the number of sheep has increased by more than 27 %. In the same period, the number of holdings with sheep has increased by almost 5 %. Since 2018 however, the number of holdings with sheep has decreased significantly. For a long period, the trend has been that the proportion of adult animals increased relative to the proportion of lambs. In 1995 there were 1.36 lambs per adult animal. For the first times in 2018 and 2019, it is estimated that the number of adult animals exceeds the number of lambs.
Since 2018, the number of broilers has increased by 5.5 % and the number of chickens for laying eggs and fowls has also increased.
