The number of organic dairy cows increased by 8 % in 2017
This report contains statistics on fully converted
organic livestock in Sweden. The statistics cover livestock reared using
organic production methods according to Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 of
28 June 2007 on organic
In June 2017, 307 100 or 20 % of the cattle were converted to organic production methods, an increase by almost 4 % since 2016. The number of dairy cows increased by 8 % and the number of suckler cows increased by 4 %. 16 % of the dairy cows and 34 % of the suckler cows were fully converted to organic farming in 2017.
The number of fully converted sheep was 126 700 in 2017, a decrease by 3 % compared with 2016. The share of organic sheep in relation to the total number of sheep was 21 %.
The number of organic laying hens has steadily been increasing up until 2016. Last year, though, the number of laying hens faced a decrease. In 2017, 1 241 000 or 17 % of the laying hens were fully converted to organic production methods, a decrease by almost 3 % compared with 2016.
For pigs and broilers the number of organic holdings are low. In 2017 the number of organic pigs increased by 6 % to 30 800. In 2016, the number of holdings producing broilers almost doubled which led to a large increase in the number of animals. In 2017, the number of broilers continued to increase although the number of holdings were almost the same. Compared with 2016, the number of broilers increased by 18 % to 171 500. The share of organic pigs and broilers is still low in relation to the total number of animals, about 2 % for each category.
