The number of organic dairy cows was 47 600 and the number of organic suckler cows was 63 900 cows in 2012. This means that the number of organic dairy cows has increased by 8 % and the number of suckler cows increased by 13 % compared with 2011. The last four years, the number of organic dairy cows increased by 40 % or 13 500 and the number of organic suckler cows has increased by 21 000 animals or 49 %.
The number of dairy cows is the highest in the county of Västra Götaland with 12 800 cows. Västra Götaland was followed by Östergötland and Jönköping County with just over 4 000 dairy cows each.
The number of organic suckler cows was also the highest in the county of Västra Götaland County with 14 000 cows. This was followed by the counties Östergötland, Värmland and Skåne. The county where both the number of dairy cows and suckler cows increased the most between 2011 and 2012 was the county of Västra Götaland, where the number of dairy cows increased by 1 400 and the number of suckler cows increased by 1 100 .
Comparisons with the proportion of organic animals and the total number of animals is possible to do for the cows. The comparison shows that 14 % of dairy cows and 33 % of suckler cows were converted to organic production. This is an increase from 2011, when the corresponding proportions were 13% and 29 % respectively.
